Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui — a window to the wider world
Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui - "the window to the wider world" - is the digital front door to Wellington's reimagined Central Library in Aotearoa New Zealand. It is designed for every Wellingtonian, from age 0 to 99, across every literacy level, device and accessibility need.
Wellington is the capital of New Zealand, and the library serves a diverse population. The brief was to introduce a building most visitors had never set foot in, and to lower the threshold for walking through the door. Rather than another council website, the site was designed as an invitation.
Te reo Māori - the Indigenous language of New Zealand - leads, with English following. This is not translation; it is bilingual authorship. An auto-detecting glossary surfaces definitions of complex te reo terms inline, turning every visit into quiet cultural learning. Language preferences persist across sessions.
The site was built in partnership with mana whenua, the Indigenous people of the land, through Māpuna Consultants. A te taiao (natural world) visual language runs throughout, anchored by the kākano (seed) motif that moves through 2D patterns, 3D particle animation and a cursor that follows the user. Visitors arrive to a karanga - a traditional Māori ceremonial welcome - voiced by artist Hana Buchanan, the same voice that welcomes people at the building's physical entrance.
Accessibility is in the user's hands. A switcher lets every visitor adjust motion, contrast and performance, shifting the site from its WCAG 2.1 AA baseline towards AAA. The site detects connection speed and device performance on arrival, offering fast mode for users on low-end devices or poor connections. Preferences persist across visits.
In its first two weeks, the site drew 7,100 organic users with no paid promotion. Opening weekend welcomed 21,600 visitors, signed up 552 new members and reactivated 468 dormant ones. One user wrote: "Being able to turn the animations off helps me concentrate and read the site better."
The site is a window. The world it opens onto is everyone's.
